Cole Cubelic on Alabama: 'It's pretty apparent Jalen Hurts isn't going to be the guy'

Cole Cubelic said he believed Jalen Hurts had a "realistic chance" to be the starting quarterback at Alabama next season,

Now, the SEC Network analyst and AL.com contributor wonders if the man who led Alabama to 26 wins in 28 starts will even be with the team.

Cubelic joined "The RoundTable"  on WJOX 94.5 FM Tuesday to discuss Alabama's A-Day and the quarterback situation in Tuscaloosa.

"I think it's pretty apparent Jalen Hurts isn't going to be the guy at quarterback," Cubelic said. "A lot of us could say we knew that going in or we didn't know. But I believed he was going to have a realistic chance to compete for the job in the fall."

Cubelic sees it a different way.

"The thing that changes for me, when you talk about what Booger's comments were, I'm losing confidence that Jalen Hurts will be a member of that football team," he said. "I'm not hung up on who's the better quarterback anymore, who has the highest ceiling, who gives them the best big-play potential. So that's kind of where my mind is with that."

On Monday, McFarland said his opinion hasn't changed since the College Football Playoff national championship.

"I think when Alabama takes the first snap this season, I think it's going to be Jalen Hurts," he said.

"Here's why. I think Jalen Hurts is consistent enough. No, he's not that greatest passer, but guess what? He's only been 24-2 (actually 26-2) as a starter. He understands how to run the offense."

A-Day capped an eventful week surrounding the quarterback competition.

Averion Hurts, father of Crimson Tide rising junior Jalen Hurts, discussed the possibility of his son transferring.

Saban, of course, was asked about the comments and it quickly became the storyline in the state last week.

Florida Atlantic coach and former Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin noted Hurts would have plenty of suitors if he decided to transfer.

Former Alabama quarterback Jacob Coker also offered some advice, as did former Tide QB Tyler Watts.
