Chicago-based IT services firm ThoughtWorks is expanding its India operations with a new centre of excellence in Mumbai.

Unlike its larger peers, ThoughtWorks gets close to 20 per cent of its revenues from India. Added to that, its India business is growing 30 per cent year-on-year, fastest among any other geographies.

The Chicago-based firm is now trying to capitalise on its India growth story to set up a CoE at the Hiranandani Business Park. This takes the company's total number of India offices to seven, including those in Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, Gurugram, Hyderabad and Pune.

“The Indian BFSI industry is experiencing a seismic shift. Banks are turning to digital natives like ThoughtWorks to build digital platform capabilities and deliver exceptional service at scale. Banks are working on the business imperative of creating futuristic systems and architecture by putting technology at the core of their organisation. For us and our India growth plan, Mumbai, financial capital makes perfect sense as the next step,” Sudhir Tiwari, MD, ThoughtWorks in India, told BusinessLine .

ThoughtWorks already has a presence in western India through its Pune office where it employs about 250 people.

In Mumbai, according to Tiwari, the company has already hired 30 people and will hire additional 40 engineers over the next few months. Overall, ThoughtWorks has about 1,500 people in India, of its 6,000-strong wrokforce spread across 33 offices across the world.

Tiwari acknowledged that ThoughtWorks hadn’t focussed on local market in India for while, but given the rapid growth of enterprises that are looking to go digital, he feels the opportunity for the company here is immense.

“We are setting up a team of systems architectural design engineers to cater to the financial industry. We are also looking to get into consulting services in which these skill-sets will help boost our capabilities,” Tiwari said.

Apart from the BFSI sector, ThoughtWorks will also target global innovation centres of large enterprises that have moved to the country over the past few years.
