Buena Borough and Buena Vista Township will test run new voting equipment during its April 20 special school and fire district elections, Atlantic County election officials announced Friday.

The races there will be run using electronic poll books and new voting machines that can interface with them.

“We’re excited to showcase this new technology in the western portion of Atlantic County,” Atlantic County Superintendent of Elections Maureen Bugdon said. “This is particularly exciting given that our first responders, school officials and their communities will have the first opportunity to experience epoll books and electronic machines on behalf of our county. It is also the first time a New Jersey county will offer both technologies in a live School/Fire Elections event, so it’s certainly an important milestone.”

The equipment will be used for early voting in future elections and was purchased through a grant made available under the Help America Vote Act.

“I commend everyone involved in this trial run of the early voting equipment. This is the wave of the future, and this pilot will go a long way in preparing us for a countywide introduction of this equipment later in the year,” Atlantic County Board of Elections Chairperson Lynn Caterson.

The products were purchased from the Nebraska-based Electronic Systems & Software.

“I have confidence in Atlantic County’s election departments, including the Superintendent, County Clerk and the Board of Elections in doing whatever is required to fully execute a fair, honest and open election,” Atlantic County Board of Elections Secretary John Mooney said.
