Movies based on video games don’t always work, but that certainly doesn’t stop folks from trying. Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts has been working on an adaptation of Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid video-game franchise for a number of years, and with Oscar Isaac signing on to play Solid Snake, the Metal Gear Solid movie has taken another step foward.

While speaking with Total Film, Oscar Isaac revealed just why he wanted to play Solid Snake in the Metal Gear Solid movie.

I just loved the game. I love the feeling that the game would give me every time I’d play. It’s just a strangely isolated, mournful, lonely game to play that has these incredible moments of violence and terror, with these weird, psychedelic concepts and villains. But, yes, it’s kind of like psychedelic military horror things that happen.

Isaac continued, “And the truth is, underneath the whole thing, it’s an anti-war story. So I think those are the elements I really love. And, like I said, I love the feel of playing it, and the big question of: can something like that be transferred – or can you explore those themes in a really interesting way – on film?

With the Metal Gear Solid movie, Jordan Vogt-Roberts has previously said that he’s hoping to “create a new type of action on screen that also is based in the quietness of the stealth, knowing that every step you take as you go further into the belly of the beast, further away from safety.” The director is also well aware that translating a video game to the big screen isn’t as easy as one might assume. “Those aren’t one-to-one translations,” Vogt-Roberts said. “So, I think you really need to understand when playing a game what it elicits from you, why it makes you feel certain ways, what the tone that it evokes is. It’s not known when the Metal Gear Solid movie will hit our screens, but Oscar Isaac will next be seen in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune on October 22, 2021.
