SAN JOSE, California: Samsung is taking artificial intelligence (AI) to the next level with its upcoming Galaxy S25 lineup, aiming to integrate advanced AI capabilities into everyday smartphone use.
The devices, unveiled in San Jose, California, are designed to act as "AI companions," simplifying tasks, anticipating user needs, and streamlining workflows.
The Galaxy S25 models-standard, Plus, and Ultra-feature essentially unchanged hardware compared to last year's Galaxy S24, apart from a faster chip and an improved ultrawide camera lens. However, the key focus is on AI innovations.
Samsung executive TM Roh highlighted the shift: "Everything you see here is the beginning of a new reality. Things that you thought you could never do, but now you can."
The Galaxy S25's AI capabilities include toggling seamlessly between apps, summarizing information, and managing tasks. A standout feature is the "personal data engine," which customizes the user experience by learning behavior patterns and preferences. The phones will also incorporate unique features like removing unwanted sounds from videos and identifying songs on command.
Samsung emphasized privacy protection, with all AI operations and data storage confined to the device itself, safeguarded by a system nicknamed Fort Knox. This mirrors Apple's privacy-first approach with its AI-enabled iPhones.
The Galaxy S25 pricing remains unchanged from last year: $800 for the standard model, $1,000 for the Plus, and $1,300 for the Ultra. The devices will be available in stores on February 7.
While the AI-driven features are impressive, analysts question their impact on consumer behavior. "The Galaxy S25 will offer a more intuitive user experience with more integrated vocal and cross-app features, but AI is not yet a key reason to buy a new smartphone," said Thomas Husson of Forrester Research.
Samsung's focus on AI follows a successful sales increase for its S24 models, which sold 32 million units-a 25 percent year-over-year jump, according to Canalys. However, Samsung struggled in the budget smartphone segment due to competition from cheaper Chinese brands, contributing to a 1 percent dip in total shipments last year.
As in previous models, the S25 relies heavily on Google's AI capabilities, including features like Google's "circle to search" technology, which will debut on the S25 before becoming available on other Android devices.
