COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - April 1 is Election Day in Colorado Springs, and KKTV wants you to Know Before You Vote!

Richard Gillit is one of the candidates running for Colorado Springs City Council in District 3.

Below is a candidate profile submitted to KKTV 11 News by Gillit:

Hometown: Born in Merced Air Force Base- Colorado Springs Hometown

How long have you lived in Colorado Springs? 16 years

Profession: Small Business Owner, Insurance Agency

Previously held and current elected positions: None

Top five priorities for Colorado Springs:

Public Safety: As a man with a young family, the safety of our neighborhoods is a top priority. Ensuring the safety of our families is a primary responsibility of our city government and I am a strong supporter of our Colorado Springs Police and Fire Department.

Wildfire Mitigation: Many families on the western side of the district are rightfully concerned about the risks of wildfires. Our fire department is doing a great job mitigating risks, but we can do more as a city to support their work and give our families confidence that our neighborhoods are safer from the threats of wildfire.

Cost of Living: Many families across the city are struggling with the realities with the rising costs of goods, utilities, and housing. For our city to remain family friendly, we need to take on the root issues associated with rising utility rates and housing to ensure we’re a place families from all generations can continue calling home.

Responsible Growth: Colorado Springs is growing, and while many residents are concerned about change, responsible growth is essential to preserving our city’s character and quality of life. As one of the top places to live, people are naturally drawn here. We must manage this growth thoughtfully—ensuring that infrastructure, housing, and public services keep pace while protecting our open spaces and community values. By balancing progress with preservation, we can maintain the charm and livability that make Colorado Springs so desirable.

Protecting our Parks and Openspaces: Protecting the parks and open spaces in Colorado Springs is vital to preserving the natural beauty that defines our city. These spaces provide not only recreation and relaxation but also a connection to nature that enriches our lives. By maintaining and expanding our parks and trails, we ensure that future generations—our children and grandchildren—can enjoy the same beauty and peace we cherish today. By my investment and partnership with the Ms. Britt Haley from the Parks and Trails Department I believe I can ensure this will not be forgotten. I will fight to keep Colorado Springs a vibrant and beautiful place for years to come.

What are your goals for the district in which you’re running?

As a candidate for Colorado Springs City Council, my goals are clear: enhancing safety and fire control to protect our community, expanding affordable housing to ensure every resident has a place to call home, and maintaining and growing our parks and trails to preserve the natural beauty and recreational spaces that make our city special. I am committed to building a stronger, safer, and more vibrant Colorado Springs for all.
