KSRTC ordinary buses are plying without insurance coverage. A quarter of the over 5,000 buses owned by KSRTC are over 15 years old and lack insurance coverage. However, newer buses, as well as Swift and long-distance buses, are insured.
For uninsured buses, KSRTC is responsible for providing accident compensation as directed by the Motor Vehicle Accident Compensation Tribunal. Paying compensation from KSRTC’s revenue may bring a huge financial burden on the corporation.

According to the Parivahan website, the RCs of KSRTC’s old buses have been marked as canceled. As per central government regulations, permits for government vehicles older than 15 years cannot be renewed. However, the Kerala government has granted an exemption for KSRTC.
Despite this exemption, details of permit renewals for government vehicles older than 15 years cannot be updated on the Parivahan portal. Currently, RTO offices in Kerala are renewing permits for KSRTC buses, but online updates are not possible.
State government-controlled institutions are given certain relaxations in insurance requirements. Citing this exemption, KSRTC buses are being operated without insurance coverage.
