An apartment lost nearly $150,000 in damages after "dropped cigarette ashes" reportedly started a fire.

Just after 8:15 a.m. on Sunday, the Layton City Fire and Hill Air Force Base departments responded to an apartment fire near 1925 North Hillfield Road.

As they made their way over, crews said they could see a large column of smoke from "some distance away."

Initial reports indicated the fire had started in a bedroom of a two-story four-plex. The resident reported having "dropped cigarette ashes," the fire department said, although a conclusion as to how the fire started has not yet been determined.

When the first unit arrived, firefighters found heavy flames venting from the south and west lower windows of one of the units.

The fire did not appear to have spread to the other units.

Crews deployed several hose lines and extinguished the fire within ten minutes of arrival.

Other units at the scene made sure everyone in the neighboring units had evacuated and assisted with ventilation, water supply, overhaul, and incident safety functions.

The Layton Police Department and Davis County Sheriff's Office assisted with traffic control.

The apartment lost approximately $150,000 in damages.

No injuries were reported.
