A helicopter was scrambled to assist in tackling a huge mountain blaze. Fire crews have been dealing with a blaze in the Carrog area of Denbighshire since Friday morning.

People living in the area were advised to keep their windows closed after the blaze broke out. On Friday, a North Wales Fire and Rescue Service statement said: "Our crews are currently dealing with a wild fire in Carrog, Corwen resulting in considerable smoke - residents are advised to close windows as a precaution. Thanks for your cooperation."

Natural Resources Wales (NRW) said the blaze was affecting a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and forest. Nick Thomas, duty tactical manager for North Wales, said: "We are supporting the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service as they work to extiguish a fire on the Berwyn Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)

"The firefighting helicopter contracted by NRW will be deployed today to assist with the efforts. The fire has encroached on an area of forestry manage by NRW.

"Our officers will continue to provide advice and information to partners on the protected landscapes and forestry blocks in this area. We will remain on site to support the emergency services, and will assess any damage to the land that we manage and surrounding area as soon as it is safe to do so.

"The recent dry spell of weather has increased the fire risk at this time. If anyone sees a fire, please report it to the fire service immediately. If anyone witnesses fires being set, they should report their concerns to Crimestoppers or the police."

The fire service has confirmed four crews remain at the scene of the blaze.

MS praises firefighter efforts tackling Conwy wildfire blaze

More than 20 firefighters, including a wildfire unit , were tackling a large wildfire in Trefriw, Conwy, which was sitll ongoing at 9:30 after being first reported at 4:47pm yesterday.

Following these reports, Janet Finch-Saunders, the Member of Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, expressed her gratitude to our local firefighters for tackling these blazes and for all of their hard work in keeping us all safe.

She said:

It was concerning to learn about the wildfires happening across Wales, with Fire and Rescue Services responding to grass fires in Merthyr Tydfil, Crickhowell and a wildfire at Trefriw.

My sincere gratitude goes out to the Fire and Rescue teams, and especially to our wonderful, dedicated local firefighters for tackling these blazes. Yet again, they have stepped in and put themselves at risk to keep us and our beautiful area safe

Natural Resources Wales firefighting helicopter sent to help battle blaze

Natural Resources Wales is assisiting the firefighting effort and has sent a helicopter. A statement by Nick Thomas Duty Tactical Manager, North Wales, said:

Fire service called to numerous wild fires

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service has had to deal with multiple wild fires yesterday (Thursday) as they battle the Carrog fire.

They were also called at 8.04pm last night to a wildfire in Talysarn. Crews are still in attendance this morning, although roads are re-opened this morning.

Some of the other incidents were:

  • 17.28 – large fire on Rhiw Goch mountain in Bronaber Gwynedd. Six crews attended.
  • 16.47 to a fire in Llyn Cowlyd, Trefriw. Six crews attended this incident.
  • 5.25am this morning to a fire in Mynydd Llandygai – three crews attended this incident.


A fire service spokesperson said: "We are still at a fire in Carrog, Corwen – we are advising residents to close windows and doors due to the smoke"
