A trio of the biggest British streaming hits have secured numerous nominations for the BAFTA TV Awards 2025, while BAFTA has recognized a stellar year for ITV’s Mr Bates vs the Post Office.
Baby Reindeer leads the charts across the BAFTA TV and Craft Awards with eight nominations including Limited Drama, Leading Actor for creator Richard Gadd and two Supporting Actresses in Jessica Gunning and Nava Mau. The latter becomes the first openly transgender nominee at the BAFTA TV Awards, several weeks after Karla Sofía Gascón achieved the same in film.
Apple TV+’s Slow Horses and Disney+’s Rivals have six nominations apiece, with Gary Oldman for the former and David Tennant for the latter doing battle in a crowded Leading Actor category, which also features Lennie James (Mr Loverman), Martin Freeman (The Responder) and Toby Jones (Mr Bates vs the Post Office). Danny Dyer, who was expected to secure a nom for Rivals, has instead been recognized for Sky comedy Mr Bigstuff in Male Performance in a Comedy.

Billie Piper (Scoop) and Monica Dolan (Mr Bates) will face off for the Leading Actress gong, with Dolan also nommed for Best Supporting Actress for Sherwood. They are up against Marisa Abela (Industry), Sharon D Clarke (Mr Loverman) and Lola Petticrew (Say Nothing).
Following a stellar year in which it generated headlines aplenty, Mr Bates has six nominations including in Limited Drama up against One Day, Baby Reindeer and Lost Boys and Fairies.
Aiming for the coveted Drama Series prize is another Netflix hit, Supacell, which comes up against a trio of BBC shows in Blue Lights, Wolf Hall: The Mirror and the Light and Sherwood.
For the big-hitting International Drama category, which often springs a surprise, Shōgun is recognized against the likes of Say Nothing and True Detective.
The BBC will be delighted with its 75 nominations, catapulting the corporation comfortably to number one ahead of Channel 4 in second (27) and Netflix third (26). Streamers put in good showings, with Disney+ landing a record 15 and Apple TV+ 13. Prime Video has just one.
In unscripted, The Traitors is once again looking good as host Claudia Winkleman chases a second Entertainment Performance gong just two years after she won her first.
The BBC’s Life and Death in Gaza doc has four noms, meanwhile, coming soon after the Royal Television Society decided not to honor journalists in Gaza, which was swiftly reversed following backlash.
BAFTA CEO Jane Milichip said: “The power of television to drive national conversation, to tap into the stories of public interest, and to inspire societal change, is second to none. And to do this through every genre is even more impressive. The drama of sport, the truth of fiction, the humanity of documentary, the poignancy of comedy, serious entertainment – this year’s nominees reflect every aspect of the human condition. UK television is at the top of its game, and it is a privilege at BAFTA to showcase the work of our incredibly talented nominees.”
The BAFTAs take place on Sunday May 11 at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Last year’s big winners included Top Boy, The Sixth Commandment and Slow Horses.
