DESOTO CO., Miss. (WMC) - A $19 million project that has been 13 years in the making is complete in DeSoto County, making it the first county in Mississippi to have 100% broadband connection.

The project started in 2012 when the county noticed there were 15,000 addresses that had a lack of internet access.

Michael Walker, the vice president of AT&T Mississippi, said that during 2020, they noticed how great the need was to improve services.

“When we look at schools, when we look at telemedicine, when we look at all the options... economic development, every single part of our lives is improved by having a high-speed internet connection that will allow you to work seamlessly,” Walker said.

The Broadband Expansion and Accessibility of Mississippi helped make this possible.

Sally Doty, the director of the organization, said DeSoto County is just step one.

“It is coming through the BEAM program. Every remaining location in Mississippi will have a provider with the obligation to build internet access,” Doty said.

There is no word on which counties could be next.
