DMW on alert, ready to aid Taiwan OFWs

MANILA, Philippines—The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Friday said it is ready to work with the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) and Taiwan Resident Representative Cheloy Garafil to activate its contingency plan in any emergency situation.

Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Cacdac, in a statement, said the DMW, in coordination with MECO and the Migrant Workers Offices in Taiwan, is closely monitoring the situation in Taiwan.

Cacdac issued the statement days after Armed Forces of the Philippines Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. told troops at the Northern Luzon Command to “prepare for any eventuality” such as the invasion of Taiwan in the face of growing regional tensions over China’s aggression.

Brawner said the command is expected to lead the rescue of about 250,000 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in case of an invasion of the self-ruled island.

The DMW, for its part, said it remains vigilant and prepared to ensure the safety and protection of Filipinos.

“To our overseas Filipino workers and their families, we urge you to remain calm and stay informed through official government channels. Trust that the Philippine government is committed to your protection and welfare,” Cacdac said.
