Rocks, humor, tech: Making geology relatable to all

The National Geological Museum in Greece is seeking to challenge the long-standing stereotype that rocks and minerals fail to captivate the general public’s interest.

Located at the Hellenic Archive of Geological and Mining Research’s HQ in Thrakomakedones, northern Athens, the new museum presents an engaging mix of impressive exhibits, storytelling with humor, interactive displays and modern technology.

It highlights Greece’s geological heritage, starting with a virtual reality experience of iconic sites such as Meteora and the mining areas of Halkidiki and Naxos. Standout features include a 240-million-year-old cephalopod fossil and a glowing collection of fluorescent minerals.

“This is a dream come true… The museum shows the value of supporting mining activities,” said Κostas Saltas, EAGME president.

However, currently, the museum is open only during weekdays, with its grand opening scheduled for May 18.
