ST PETE – The Woodson African American Museum of Florida is honored to welcome Emmy Award-winning sculptor Wesley Wofford this weekend in celebration of his powerful piece, “Harriet Tubman – The Beacon of Hope,” currently on display in the museum’s Legacy Garden for its first appearance in the state of Florida.
Wofford’s visit to St. Petersburg further elevates the significance of the 12-foot bronze sculpture, which portrays a larger-than-life depiction of Harriet Tubman—abolitionist, humanitarian, and fearless conductor of the Underground Railroad, who led more than 70 missions to freedom.
Wofford, a Georgia native born in 1972, began his career in Hollywood, specializing in special makeup effects for film. His innovative work with silicone prosthetics earned him both an Emmy Award and an Academy Award. Yet, seeking a deeper artistic purpose, Wofford transitioned to figurative sculpture, merging technical mastery with emotional storytelling in monumental works of public art.
The journey of The Beacon of Hope to The Woodson was itself a testament to Tubman’s own perseverance. After more than two years of planning and a treacherous snowstorm in route from Niagara Falls, the sculpture arrived in St. Petersburg this January. “Her travels south felt symbolic of her life’s mission,” said Terri Lipsey Scott, Executive Director of The Woodson. “Much like Tubman, the sculpture’s arrival was met with resistance, delay, and challenge—yet it arrived, standing tall representing strength and resilience.”
The museum is proud to host this transformative work, which serves as a stirring reminder of courage, hope, and the ongoing pursuit of freedom.
Wofford’s weekend in St. Petersburg includes a series of community-centered events:
- Friday: Middle and elementary school scholars—including participants in the Journeys to Journalism program—will engage directly with the artist, exploring both the creative and cultural dimensions of the sculpture.
- Saturday at 5:00 PM: Wofford will host A Conversation with the Artist during the museum’s Art Walk, offering guests an intimate look into his process and inspiration.
- Sunday at 4:00 PM: The weekend culminates with a dramatic Reenactment of the Underground Railroad, directed by Dr. Cody Clark, in the Legacy Garden. The event will include a brief presentation by Wofford on the inspiration behind The Beacon of Hope and an opportunity to engage with the artist directly.
The Woodson warmly invites the entire community to participate in these historic moments of dialogue, art, and celebration.
