Ksenia Karelina, a dual US-Russian national released by Moscow in prisoner swap, arrives in US

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Russian-American woman freed by Moscow has arrived back in the United States as part of a prisoner swap completed as the two countries aim to repair ties. A plane carrying Ksenia Karelina landed around 11 p.m. EDT at Joint Base Andrews, where she was greeted by her fiancé. She was released earlier in the day in exchange for a Russian-German man who’d been jailed in the U.S. on smuggling charges. Karelina was arrested in the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg in February 2024 and convicted of treason on charges stemming from a donation of about $52 to a charity aiding Ukraine. U.S. authorities have called the case “absolutely ludicrous.”

NYC sightseeing helicopter plunges into river, killing 6, including family of Spanish tourists

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City sightseeing helicopter has broken apart in midair and crashed into the Hudson River, killing six people. A person familiar with the investigation tells The Associated Press that the victims include Siemens executive Agustin Escobar, his wife, Merce Camprubi Montal, and three children, in addition to the pilot. Authorities say the flight left a downtown heliport Thursday afternoon and lasted less than 18 minutes. A witness saw the helicopter falling apart in midair, with the tail and main rotor coming off. Rescue boats circled the submerged aircraft within minutes of impact near the end of a pier. Recovery crews hoisted the wreckage from the water just after 8 p.m. using a floating crane.

Asian shares sink, with Japan's Nikkei down 5.6% as China-US trade war escalates

BANGKOK (AP) — Shares in Asia have fallen in early trading after U.S. stocks gave up a chunk of their historic gains from the day before. The deepening worries over President Donald Trump’s trade war helped pull Japan's Nikkei 225 share index down 5.6%. Shares also fell in South Korea and Australia in early trading Friday. Taiwan gained. On Thursday, the S&P 500 fell 3.5% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 2.5%. The Nasdaq composite sank 4.3%. China announced more countermeasures against the United States, and losses for stocks accelerated after the White House clarified that it will tax Chinese imports at 145%, not the 125% rate Trump had earlier written about.

Supreme Court says Trump administration must work to bring back mistakenly deported Maryland man

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court says the Trump administration must work to bring back a Maryland man who was mistakenly deported to El Salvador, rejecting the administration’s emergency appeal. The court acted Thursday in the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran citizen who had an immigration court order preventing his deportation to his native country over fears he would face persecution from local gangs. The administration has conceded that it made a mistake in sending him to El Salvador, where he is being held in a notorious prison, but also argued that it no longer could do anything about it.

Social Security lists thousands of living immigrants as dead to prompt them to leave, AP sources say

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration has moved to classify more than 6,000 living immigrants as dead. Two people familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Thursday that the immigrants' Social Security numbers are being canceled, which will effectively wipe out their ability to work or receive benefits, in an effort to get them to leave the country. The move will make it much harder for those affected to use banks or other basic services where Social Security numbers are required. It’s part of a broader effort by President Donald Trump to crack down on immigrants who were allowed to enter and remain temporarily in the Untied States under programs instituted by President Joe Biden.

Judge allows requirement that everyone in the US illegally must register to move forward

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge is allowing the Trump administration to move forward with a requirement that everyone in the U.S. illegally must register with the federal government. Judge Trevor Neil McFadden made the ruling Thursday, one day before the requirement is to go into effect. The Department of Homeland Security announced the mandate in February, and said those who didn’t self-report could face fines or prosecution. Failure to register would be considered a crime, and people would be required carry registration documents with them or risk prison time and fines.

Burials begin as the search ends for victims in the Dominican nightclub collapse that killed 221

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) — The number of people killed when a roof collapsed at an iconic nightclub in the Dominican Republic has surged to 221. Burials and funerals are taking place Thursday for some of the dead, including merengue icon Rubby Pérez who was performing on stage early Tuesday when the cement roof fell onto clubgoers at the Jet Set club in Santo Domingo. The Center of Emergency Operations finalized its search after crews rescued 189 people alive from the rubble. Doctors are warning that some of the two dozen patients who remain hospitalized are still not in the clear, especially eight who are in critical condition.

Justin Rose steals the Masters show and builds 3-shot lead over Scottie Scheffler

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Justin Rose showed there's more than two players capable of winning a Masters green jacket. With all the attention on Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy he matched his personal best at Augusta National with a 65. That gives Rose a three-shot lead over Scheffler, Ludvig Aberg and Corey Conners. McIlroy took two double bogeys in the closing stretch and was seven shots behind. Rose now has led the opening round five times. That's a Masters record. But he doesn't have a green jacket to show for it. Scheffler says he was happy with a bogey-free start.

Cannes Film Festival sets lineup with Ari Aster, Wes Anderson and, yes, Spike Lee

PARIS (AP) — New films from Wes Anderson, Ari Aster, and Richard Linklater will compete for the Palme d’Or at the 78th Cannes Film Festival. Coming off a 2024 edition that produced the Academy Award best-picture winner “Anora,” as well as a number of Oscar contenders in “Emilia Pérez,” “The Substance” and “The Apprentice,” the French film festival responded with a 2025 lineup bursting with big-name auteurs. Entries include Aster’s “Eddington,” a pandemic-set Western starring Joaquin Phoenix, Pedro Pascal and Emma Stone; Anderson’s “The Phoenician Scheme,” starring Benicio Del Toro as a European profiteer and Linklater’s appropriately French-language “Nouvelle Vague,” about Jean-Luc Godard and the French New Wave.

Israel releases 10 Palestinians detained from Gaza. They say they suffered abuse

DEIR AL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — Israel has freed 10 Palestinians detained from Gaza, the latest in periodic releases from the thousands of people troops have seized during the military campaign in the territory. The men returned to the Gaza Strip and said they had suffered frequent abuse while imprisoned, including beatings. They were welcomed by family members at a hospital in central Gaza. There was no immediate comment by the military. Israeli officials have said that they abide by the letter of the law in the treatment of prisoners and investigate violations. But there have been widespread reports of abuse of Palestinian detainees in military prison camps and civilian prisons.
