It's a great week for a beautiful village in the North East as, not only has it been rated the third best place to live in all of the UK, but its very own beach has also been singled out for international acclaim.
Shooting up the rankings from its position 12 months ago, Whitburn in South Tyneside, finished in third spot in a new list of the most desirable places to call home by property experts Garrington, just behind picture postcard village Redbourne in Hertfordshire and Epson in Surrey. And it's not just its stunning homes and good quality of life that Whitburn has going for it, as its beach has now landed on the radar of world famous media outlet Condé Nast.
Whitburn beach, known locally as Jackie's beach, appears on a guide to the best beaches near Newcastle, which also features the likes of Northumberland's Hauxley Haven. and Druridge Bay and ones further down the coast like Old Hartley, King Edward's Bay and Cullercoats. Not too far from its better known neighbours Sandhaven, Seaburn and Roker, Whitburn beach probably isn't one that immediately springs to mind when you think of the top ones in the North East, but it's clearly done enough to impress the writers at Condé Nast, who describe it as being forming part of the 'Roker Riviera' and also mention the fact that Lewis Carroll, author of Alice in Wonderland, also spent a lot of time in the area when visiting his cousin.
The online review reads: 'The sea is still as wet and the beach as dry as it was in their day, but the perambulating oysters have been replaced by kite-flying families and dog walkers (though you can still spot pods of bottlenose dolphins and even the occasional minke whale).
There are a number of places to head for food and drink in Whitburn and its the most famous one that is singled out by Condé Nast - Latimers, a place that has been serving up top notch seafood for decades now and is also a great places to go get some food to take to the beach for a rather luxurious picnic, with the bay being a great place to enjoy one.
