NTSA set to install digital cameras on all major roads to curb speeding

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has revealed that the pilot phase of it’s digital highway surveillance project is progressing well.

Launched in November 2024, the initiative introduced digital cameras on major roads like Thika Superhighway, Mombasa Road, and the Southern Bypass.

Speed control through real-time monitoring

These advanced cameras will actively capture vehicles that exceed speed limits and immediately issue tickets through mobile devices, an initiative that will help curb reckless driving and reduce the rising number of accidents caused by speeding.

NTSA seeks support from parliament

During a session with the National Assembly Committee on Transport, NTSA Director General George Njao requested more funding for nationwide implementation

“We’ve completed the six-month test phase, and the data we collected is both accurate and actionable. The next phase involves distributing 408 enrollment kits across the country,” he told the committee.

Diaspora drivers to benefit from new kits

Njao also highlighted that the new enrollment kits would assist Kenyans living abroad. These kits will allow them to update their driving records remotely.
“They’ll no longer need to return home just to update credentials. This innovation ensures inclusivity,” he added.

Government committed to expansion

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir backed the project, calling for the institutionalization of the digital system revealing that the government plans to acquire more digital cameras both fixed and mobile to improve road safety.
“With enough test data, we’re ready for the next phase. These tools will help transform driver behavior on our roads,” he said.

Parliament applauds tech-driven road safety

Members of Parliament supported the use of technology in curbing traffic violations. They praised the real-time detection system for holding drivers accountable instantly, which is expected to deter repeat offenses.

Embracing smart solutions for safer roads

As NTSA gears up for full implementation, the digital surveillance project represents a major leap in road safety enforcement. With consistent government backing, this system could significantly reduce road carnage through innovation, efficiency, and accountability.
