Construction has begun on the new tower at Jefferson City Memorial Airport.

The city posted an image on social media Friday that showed the future entrance to the new air traffic control tower, which the Jefferson City Council approved in September.

The social media post comes more than four months after the groundbreaking ceremony for the new tower.

The new air traffic control tower at JEF will replace the current tower, which was built as a temporary structure in 1973, according to the city.

The city calls the new tower a "much-needed upgrade."

Funding for the project includes $6.4 million secured by former 3rd District Congressman Blaine Luetkemeyer. The city has received financial support from the Missouri Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration to build the new tower.

The new tower will be located on the south side of the airport and will provide better sight lines and ensure uninterrupted operations during construction, according to past KOMU 8 reporting.
