When the SF team got the call to attend a dealer demo-day for the Can-Am Outlander series, we knew we were in for something special. Held in the rugged terrain of Montalet-le-Bois, France, this wasn’t just a chance to see the machines - it was an invitation to put them through their paces. From rocky climbs to muddy trails, we pushed the Outlanders to the limit to see just what these ATVs are made of.
The Can-Am Outlander has long been a staple in the world of ATVs, renowned for its rugged performance and versatility.
For 2025, Can-Am has taken their Outlander 850 and 1000 models to new heights, delivering a complete redesign that promises to redefine the riding experience.
Powered by a robust 999cc twin-cylinder engine, these updated machines come with an all-new chassis and a range of enhancements tailored for both recreational and utilitarian use.
For farmers and landowners looking to tackle tough terrains, manage heavy workloads, or explore expansive properties, these new Outlanders offer an impressive combination of power, stability, and practicality.
A new chassis and engine for 2025
One of the most significant updates to the 2025 Outlander 850 and 1000 is the newly redesigned chassis. Both models now feature a robust frame borrowed from the 500–700cc variants, featuring dual A-arms on all four corners, replacing the old rear trailing-arm setup. This new design improves handling, stability, and overall ride comfort, a crucial benefit when navigating unpredictable farm terrains. The Rotax-engineered 999cc V-twin engine, equipped with double overhead cams (DOHC), brings more power and smoother performance.
Redesigned for 2025, the Outlander models feature 12 inches of rear and 10.8 inches of front suspension travel for improved handling and comfort
The Outlander 1000R, the more powerful of the two, churns out 101hp and 93Nm of torque, while the 850 version delivers 82hp and 90Nm of torque. What makes these machines particularly relevant for farm use is the ability to toggle between three power modes - Standard, Work, and Sport - allowing operators to adjust the engine's performance depending on the task at hand.
Whether pulling a plough, carrying a heavy load, or tearing up rugged trails, these modes offer the flexibility to tailor power delivery for maximum efficiency.
Designed for work and play
With agricultural work often demanding versatility and endurance from machinery, the Outlander’s suspension system has been completely overhauled for 2025. The front now boasts 10.8 inches of travel, while the rear offers an impressive 12 inches. This makes navigating rough fields, tree roots, and other obstacles a breeze.
The addition of three-position Fox shocks allows for more precise tuning, ensuring a comfortable ride even when dealing with uneven or unpredictable terrain.
Farmers will particularly appreciate the new suspension's ability to soak up bumps and ruts without compromising stability or control. Whether you're riding across fields, moving equipment, or scouting far-flung areas of your farm, the suspension system provides excellent comfort and traction.
A centrally-mounted 19.5-litre fuel tank improves weight distribution and extends run time during long work days or trail rides
Additionally, the new Outlander 850 and 1000 models both feature an increased ground clearance of 30cm, which is perfect for negotiating high grass, mud, and uneven surfaces found on rural properties.
Performance that handles farm demands
Despite the Outlander 1000R's beefy 439kg weight, it doesn't feel unwieldy on the trail. Can-Am's engineering has ensured that these models maintain a balanced and easy-to-handle experience, even for the most demanding tasks. The transfer of power from the trigger to ground is instant, yet it handles incredibly smoothly at pace.
The Outlander’s powerful engine, combined with advanced suspension and differential systems, means it can comfortably tow up to 830kg - ideal for hauling tools, feed, or materials across farm tracks or muddy fields.
For trail enthusiasts and farm workers alike, the 1000R can hit speeds of up to 113 km/h, though it’s more likely to be used in the practical Work or Standard mode for farm chores.
Front and rear racks can carry a combined total of 163kg, with a redesigned rear cargo area capable of handling larger items more securely
Farmers will appreciate the utility features like the redesigned rear cargo area, which can carry up to 160kg, and the addition of a front storage space for smaller items such as tools or mobile phones.
Tailored for efficiency
In addition to its power and handling upgrades, the 2025 Outlander series focuses on improving efficiency and ease of use. The 850 and 1000R models now come with a 19.5-litre fuel tank that is centrally located under the seat for improved weight distribution.
This allows for longer working hours in the field without frequent stops for refuelling. Whether you're towing, hauling, or simply cruising the farm, the increased fuel capacity ensures you can get more done with fewer interruptions.
Both models are equipped with a winch as standard, which can be invaluable for agricultural tasks such as pulling heavy equipment or clearing obstacles. Additionally, the front and rear racks can now hold up to 163kg combined, making the Outlander an excellent choice for transporting large loads across rugged terrain.
Practical features for farm use
Can-Am's focus on user-friendly design means that farmers will find plenty of small, but useful features. A handy cubby just in front of the operator allows for phone storage and charging, while a 7.6-inch screen on the handlebars provides essential riding information immediately.
The inclusion of LED lights, handguards, and full-length skid plates adds a layer of practicality, protecting the machine from the elements and ensuring long-lasting durability, even when working in harsh conditions.
Selectable power modes - Standard, Work, and Sport - allow the rider to tailor engine output for different tasks and conditions
Furthermore, the Outlander’s upgraded 4WD system includes options for limited-slip, full-lock, and open-diff modes, making it easier to adapt to a variety of terrains. The Visco-Lok front differential system provides additional traction, ensuring that the Outlander remains steady on slick or muddy surfaces - perfect for farm environments.
Accessory options and customisation
For those looking to personalise their Outlander, Can-Am offers a wide range of accessories to suit every need. Farmers can choose from storage boxes, windshields, LED light bars, and even snow or mud-resistant speakers.
The extensive range of options ensures that each Outlander can be tailored to the specific needs of the rider, whether for agricultural work or leisurely trail rides.
The handling on the Outlander series was incredibly smooth, with the immediate transfer of power from throttle to acceleration evident
Whether you're a farmer looking for an ATV that can handle heavy-duty tasks like towing and hauling or a trail enthusiast looking for an adrenaline-filled ride, the 2025 Can-Am Outlander 850 and 1000R models are an exceptional choice.
With their powerful engines, revamped suspension, increased load capacities, and practical features, these ATVs are built to tackle anything from farm chores to off-road adventures. The Outlander 1000R, priced at £13,199, and the Outlander 850, starting at £11,199, offer excellent value for anyone needing a versatile and powerful machine for work or play.
Glen's thoughts - Having attended the Can-Am dealer demo-day I was very impressed by the Outlander 1000R and 850 models.
Both are incredibly powerful and enjoyable to operate, with smooth, instant power transfer from throttle to acceleration. I had the opportunity to put the quads through their paces, and they responded to all manners of terrain with ease. Despite the challenging conditions, the comfort provided by the machines was exceptional. The performance and comfort on rough terrain highlighted their versatility.
While the 1000R is perfect for trail sports due to its high power, it might not be the most practical for everyday farm use. The top-spec MAX model, starting at £21,999, is a hefty investment. On the other hand, the 850 model, at around £15,699, offers a more affordable and fuel-efficient option for farms without compromising on power and utility.
If I were in the market for an ATV, the Outlander 850 would certainly be in contention as the ideal blend of power, practicality, and value for money.
