Is Reddit Down? User Outage Reports Surge Across US

Social media platform and online forum Reddit is experiencing a "global outage," according to Downdetector, a website and service that tracks real-time outages and issues for various websites, apps, and internet services.

Newsweek reached out to Reddit via email for comment on Monday afternoon.

    Why It Matters

Downdetector reported that Reddit had more than 109,000 outage reports as of 11:41 a.m. ET. Reddit Status, an account on X, formerly Twitter, run by Reddit that reports on the platform's status, said it was investigating "elevated" errors across the website and apps at 11:52 a.m.

The account said the incident was resolved at 12:21 p.m. ET. By 12:26 p.m., the number of reported issues on Downdetector had decreased to a little over 600.

    What To Know

According to Downdetector, 59 percent of reported problems occurred in the app, 29 percent occurred on the website, and 12 percent experienced issues with server connection.

The last incident reported on Reddit Status was on April 2. Reddit said moderators were experiencing issues loading comment pages and moderating comments in their communities. The incident was resolved that same day.

    What Is Reddit?

Reddit is a vast online platform that blends elements of a forum, social media and a news aggregator. Launched in 2005, the site allows users to submit posts, share links, ask questions, and engage in discussions across countless communities known as "subreddits." Each subreddit focuses on a specific topic, ranging from tech and politics to memes, fitness, or even niche interests like r/Antiques.

What sets Reddit apart is its voting system: users upvote or downvote content based on quality or relevance, helping the most valued posts rise to the top. The community-driven nature of the site gives it a raw, often unfiltered quality, and it's known both for sparking viral trends and providing deep, informative conversations.

    What People Are Saying

Reddit status on X, formerly Twitter: "We are currently investigating elevated errors across http://reddit.com and the apps."

A disgruntled Reddit user wrote on X: "I hardly use Reddit. But the one time I need to research something, the website goes down."

    What Happens Next

Reddit users can view reported incidents on X or the Reddit Status website. The website says all systems are currently operational.
