The WBA has elevated Jaron Ennis to a super champion at welterweight and ordered him to defend his belt against Shakhram Giyasov.
Ennis secured the biggest victory of his career when he knocked out Eimantas Stanionis to unify the welterweight division. He became the IBF, WBA and Ring Magazine Champion, taking his record to 34-0. Now, he is two belts away from becoming the Undisputed Welterweight Champion. He would be the second person after Terence Crawford, who achieved that feat by stopping Errol Spence Jr. in 2023. However, there are now some additional hurdles in the way.
Boots had already been granted permission to face Stanionis, with the winner facing Giyasov. Ennis has 120 days from April 12 to defend his belt. Giyasov is unlikely to give up his shot since world title opportunities do not come about frequently. Eddie Hearn is likely to push for another unification against either Brian Norman Jr., who holds the WBO belt, or Mario Barrios, who is the WBC Champion.
Reports indicated that Norman Jr. was previously in talks over a fight. However, it is alleged that Norman Jr.’s team wanted too much money, as the fight never happened. Hearn urged Norman Jr. to take a risk by making this fight, saying there was enough money in the pot.
“I would have felt like we hadn’t done our job if he moved up without unifying the division. I hope that the other champions have ambition. Brian Norman’s a great fighter. Don’t we want to make great fights for the sport? Watch what [Ennis] does over the next few years. He’s going through all the divisions,” Hearn stated
Alternatively, a fight against Barrios would also prove huge. Barrios has already tasted defeat twice in his career, coming up short against Gervonta Davis at 140 pounds. He also lost to Keith Thurman in a welterweight fight when One Time was no longer considered at the peak of his career. Barrios is seen as the weaker of the two champions at the weight class. Ennis has reportedly dominated Norman Jr. already, making it pragmatic to make a unification fight. However, it depends on whether Ennis would be able to secure that as he has mandatory obligations.
“Notably, Giyasov previously stepped aside to allow a unification bout between Ennis and Eimantas Stanionis, despite being next in line for a title shot. Per WBA rules, Ennis must face Giyasov within 120 days of his April 12 victory over Stanionis.
“According to WBA Rule C.17: “In exceptional circumstances, the Championships Committee and the President may designate a Champion as a Super Champion; and may establish criteria for a Super Championship,” the sanctioning body stated. “The Committee and President may determine conditions and requirements of defenses and retention of such title.
“Acting within its regulatory authority, the WBA has elevated Ennis to Super Champion status, while Garcia and Romero will battle for the vacant WBA World Welterweight Championship – adding even more heat to an already explosive 147-pound division,” WBA said

Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli was asked if the Toronto Maple Leafs would consider an Auston Matthews trade this summer. After another disappointing end to the season, the obvious names like Mitch Marner (UFA), John Tavares (UFA) and Brendan Shanahan (contract ending) could leave. But, would the Leafs consider trading their captain and a recently signed superstar? Seravalli responded that the Leafs will consider a trade, even if the likelihood isn’t high. Everything is on the table as the Leafs find themselves in a position to make tough decisions. Trade discussions may not actually happen with other teams, but the Maple Leafs will probably engage in those conversations behind closed doors. This is a time of serious reflection for the organization, and at the top of the list is what to do with the team captain and leader. Why would the Leafs trade Matthews? The argument for at least considering a trade starts with Matthews’ impossibly low scoring rate in the playoffs. Seravalli notes that Matthews has scored in only 23 of his 68 playoff games. For a .65 goals per game player, this is a significant red flag. Beyond that, Seravalli notes that chronic injuries have to be a huge concern. Trading Matthews would be taking things to the far extreme, but that may be where the organization is at. Following another disappointing playoff exit, the team has been asking questions it doesn’t have answers to. Matthews is a legitimate Superstar and one of the best goal scorers of his generation. If he is on the trade block, there should be plenty of interest. However, teams will have to be concerned about the same things the Maple Leafs may potentially be, including injuries and his lack of showing up as a leader when the games matter most. Could the Leafs lose Marner and Matthews? With Marner potentially already on his way out as a pending UFA, losing Matthews in a trade could equate to the most significant swing in Maple Leafs franchise history. Should Marner and Matthews both not be with the team next season, it would signal an entirely new path for the Maple Leafs, a team led by William Nylander and potentially whoever the Maple Leafs sign over the summer.
A major update on the health of referee Chris Rooney has been provided after he was hurt in a scary incident in Game 7 between the Florida Panthers and Maple Leafs. Amidst the drama of a Game 7 between the divisional foes Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs was a scary injury to referee Chris Rooney. Just seconds into the 2nd period, Rooney was hurt when he took an accidental high stick to his face from Panthers defenseman Niko Mikkola, causing him to immediately collapse to the ice while bleeding profusely. Immediately, trainers from both clubs came to his aid while arena personnel eventually had a considerable cleanup job to do. A stretcher was briefly carted out in Rooney's direction, but it was decided that he didn't need it. The good news for Rooney is that while he won't return to the game, he received stitches above his eye; there was immediate concern that his eye could have been the principal point of contact with Mikkola's stick blade. Top analyst Elliotte Friedman also put the concerns of fans at ease about Rooney's condition, saying that his eye wasn't affected by the incident: Standby referee Garrett Rank replaced Rooney, and will work the rest of the game. Rooney is one of the longest-tenured referees in the NHL, having worked since 2002 and overseen over 1,500 games. Meanwhile, Rank has been an NHL referee since 2015. Every NHL venue has a standby referee ready to go in the event of an injury to one of the on-ice officials
J.J. McCarthy, quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, was recently discussed as a player by retired NFL quarterback, Kurt Warner. Warner appeared on ‘The Jim Rome Show’ over the weekend and revealed how he expected McCarthy to fit in with head coach Kevin O’Donnell’s strategies for the team. McCarthy played his rookie season with the Vikings last year after being selected as the tenth pick in the very first round of the NFL draft. Before the league, the 22-year-old quarterback played college football for the Michigan Wolverines. His first season with the Minnesota Vikings had injury woes after McCarthy tore his meniscus. NFL analysts like Warner are expecting McCarthy to do better in the upcoming season. “I think they’re gonna be a good team,” Warner said. “I think they’re going to be a good offense. There’s enough pieces and Coach O’Connell does such a great job of setting up his quarterback to make plays that they’re going to be a good football team. I just don’t know how good JJ McCarthy is going to be at the NFL level. I just need to see more of that. He’s got the physical ability to do it. I know he can push the ball down the field, but consistency when it comes to playing the quarterback position is what this is all about,” Kurt Warner said about J.J. McCarthy in ‘The Jim Rome Show’ on Saturday. J.J. McCarthy’s head coach, Kevin O’Donnell, has been working with the Minnesota Vikings since 2022. This was O’Donnell’s first gig as head coach. Before the Vikings, O’Donnell was the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams. J.J. McCarthy And Vikings To Lock Horns With Chicago Bears In Opening Game Meanwhile, J.J. McCarthy and the Minnesota Vikings are getting ready to face the Chicago Bears to officially kick off their upcoming NFL season. Before the Bears, the Minnesota Vikings will warm up with three preseason games against the Houston Texans, the New England Patriots and the Tennessee Titans. The Vikings will be eager to do much better in the 2025 NFL season when compared to their previous year. In the season before this, Minnesota finished second in the NFC North with 14 wins and three defeats. The Vikings made it to the NFL Wild Card round to take on the Los Angeles Rams, but lost disastrously 27-9. After meeting the Bears, the Vikings will be playing against the Atlanta Falcons for their second matchup of the season.
The Los Angeles Lakers have a lot of decisions to make as we enter this pivotal summer. After falling short this season, it is clear as day that the Lakers need to retool their roster if they want to seriously compete for a title next season and beyond. That said, there's no need for a complete overhaul. Several pieces already in place—like forward Dorian Finney-Smith—could still play a valuable role in their pursuit of a championship. Finney-Smith was traded to the Lakers in late December and proved to be a valuable player for the team throughout the season. It was a move that was deemed necessary as the Lakers needed a player who could impact both sides of the floor, especially the defensive side. As Finney-Smith stares into free agency, he has some big decisions to make. In a recent interview, Finney-Smith dropped hints on what he might do this summer. “Being here has been amazing,” he said in his exit interview. “Making it to the 3-seed has been fun, Luka coming in February was a big surprise to many, especially me. Happy to be back with my dawg. Just mad right now that our season ended," said Finney-Smith. His future in Los Angeles remains uncertain. While the team would welcome his return, they likely wouldn't lose sleep if he decided to move on. However, it is clear he loves being a Laker and playing with his good friend, Luka Doncic. “Being here has been amazing,” he said in his exit interview. “Making it to the 3-seed has been fun, Luka coming in February was a big surprise to many, especially me. Happy to be back with my dawg. Just mad right now that our season ended.” Finney-Smith's time as a Laker has been solid. In 43 games and 20 starts in L.A., he averaged 7.9 points per game, 3.6 rebounds, 1.4 assists, and 0.9 steals while shooting 44.3 percent from the field and 39.8 percent from beyond the arc. The 32-year-old will soon enter his 10th season in the league, but where that will be remains a mystery.
