The Baltimore City School District recently announced that it was the victim of a cyber attack that exposed the personal information of 25,000 students and staff. So what is the district doing to better protect that data?

On a Friday edition of FOX45 Morning News Tom Rodgers spoke with Jeremy Portnoy, and investigative journalist at OpenTheBooks.com, about what the district spends on technology services. Portnoy detailed the budget.

"Last year the budget was $27 million," Portnoy said. "This year that budget got dropped to just $20 million. Now that office is split into three divisions and for years the cyber security division actually had the lowest budget of the three."

And Portnoy's findings show that it won't be a level playing field come next year.

"[BCPSS] is planning on investing another $4 million in developing new data systems," Portnoy said. "And just an extra $400,000 in cyber security."
