The Don Smith Performing Arts Center was filled with pride and promise April 22 as 120 students from Smith Intermediate School, Wheat Middle School and Cleburne High School were inducted into the AVID program during the district’s annual AVID Induction Ceremony.

AVID — which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination — is a nationally recognized program that prepares students for college readiness and success by focusing on academic support, leadership development, and organizational strategies. The ceremony honored students who have demonstrated strong potential and a commitment to achieving their academic goals.

This year’s event featured inspiring student speakers who shared how AVID has impacted their educational journeys. David Martinez, a student in the AVID Excel program at Wheat Middle School, spoke about overcoming language barriers and building confidence through AVID’s support system.

Cleburne High School AVID student Morgan Lamum also addressed the audience, highlighting the ways AVID has provided tools and encouragement for success both inside and outside the classroom. Her message resonated with many in the audience, especially the newly inducted students who are just beginning their AVID journey.

Adding a special touch to the evening was CHS alum and AVID tutor Kiley Tanner, who reflected on her time as an AVID student and the full-circle moment of now serving and mentoring students in the same program that helped shape her future. Her story underscored the lasting impact AVID can have on a student’s life.

“We are excited to welcome our newest and largest group of AVID inductees,” Deputy Superintendent Kristi Rhone said. “Through AVID, our students are given the tools and strategies to succeed academically. They are also empowered with the confidence and support to pursue higher education.

“Our students will explore college pathways, visit campuses, prepare for rigorous coursework, and build the skills needed to thrive beyond school.”

Family, friends, teachers and AVID coordinators gathered to celebrate this important milestone and encourage the inductees as they continue their path toward college and career readiness.
