Pune: A 19-year-old first-year student of law was found dead at his hostel room on the premises of a city-based law college on Friday morning.
The victim, a native of Wardha district, was found frothing from his mouth around 10am when his friend went to his room. The friend alerted the college authorities and the victim was taken to a nearby hospital. The doctors declared him dead.
A senior official at the law college said he was a bright student. "His attendance was very good, but he remained aloof. He did not mix much with his classmates. He shared room with two classmates. They used to invite him to have meals together or for group studies. The boy, however, never participated. He appeared for two ongoing semester examination papers and he wrote them well. It is an unfortunate incident."
Senior inspector Girisha Nimbalkar of the Deccan Gymkhana police said we have found three different tablets from in his hostel room. The police are investigating whether it was a case of suicide or medicine overdose, Nimbalkar said.
She said the student's post-mortem report is awaited. "After the report, it could be confirmed either he was taking the tablets regularly or it is a case of suicide by medicine overdose," she said.
Nimbalkar said the police have registered a case of accidental death and started investigations. "We have informed the student's parents. His mother is a nurse in a hospital in Wardha district. They are on their wayt to Pune," Nimbalkar said.
