QUINCY — Quincy Transit Lines has received 13 new buses to update the aging fleet of city buses, all at no cost to the city of Quincy.
Ten new super-medium duty buses were delivered to the city on Wednesday, replacing the entire current fixed-route fleet. Built on a Ford F550 chassis and using StarCraft Allstar XL coach bodies, the buses will operate on unleaded gasoline as opposed to the current diesel fleet. Each of the new buses will have seating for up to 26 passengers and will all be wheelchair accessible.
In addition, three other buses will serve the Disabled and Elderly transportation programs. Built on the F450 chassis with Allstar bodies, each of these three buses will seat up to 16 passengers and include improved wheelchair lifts for better access.
The city will add communications systems and Quincy Transit branding before being rolled out to serve the transit routes in Quincy.
"This investment ensures our community continues to receive safe, modern, and reliable transit service," Transit Lines Director Marty Stegeman said.
The buses were awarded to Quincy through the Illinois Department of Transportation's Consolidated Vehicle Procurement Program. The program is a statewide effort to improve local access to public transportation.
"We are grateful for the state's continued support of local transit," Stegeman said.
