On Thursday, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded around $215,000 in literacy grants to schools, libraries, and nonprofits across South Carolina.

The funding is part of a record $13.2 million donation, the largest single-day giving in the Foundation’s history, supporting literacy programs in all 48 states where Dollar General operates.

“For over 30 years, the Foundation has been investing in literacy and basic education programs in our hometown communities,” said Denine Torr, executive director of the Dollar General Literacy Foundation. “Today’s grant announcement is a celebration of our unwavering commitment to student and teacher success. We are grateful to all the grant recipients for their commitment to advancing education and helping students thrive.”

The grants are expected to benefit more than 8,600 people in South Carolina and will help fund or expand adult, family, and summer literacy programs.

Organizations within 15 miles of a Dollar General store or distribution center were eligible.

Grant funding can be used for things like books, technology, software, and other materials to improve literacy efforts.
