Ashley, North Brunswick & Whiteville among teams advancing in high school playoffs
WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) - A chance of severe weather Friday night forced some high schools to move their second-round baseball and softball playoff games to Thursday night, and several area squads took advantage of the change to move into the third round.
In the 4A baseball playoffs, New Hanover dropped a 7-2 game to top-seeded DH Conley. Ashley High School’s baseball team got a win at home, beating Apex Friendship 4-3.
North Brunswick shut out West Johnston 5-0 to advance to the next round of the 3A playoffs.
Whiteville advanced to the third round of the 2A playoffs with a 6-0 shutout win over Farmville Central.
In 1A baseball playoffs, East Wake scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat East Columbus in a 13-12 slugfest.
Laney High School came into the playoffs as the second seed in the 4A bracket, and the Bucs had home-field advantage against 15th-seeded Garner. But the visitors exploded in the top of the first inning for eight runs to make it tough for the home team to rebound. Gaby Mizelle had two home runs in that first inning, and Garner went on to eliminate Laney by a 14-2 count.
All other area high schools still alive in the playoffs are scheduled to play Friday in second round matchups. Fans can click here to visit the North Carolina High School Athletic Association website for more information.
