Jeremie Frimpong has emerged as a leading candidate should Liverpool look to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold this summer. The defender confirmed on Monday morning that he will leave the club when his contract expires in the summer.
Then it emerged on Tuesday that Real Madrid have made an initial approach to Liverpool over signing Alexander-Arnold in time for the Club World Cup. The 26-year-old right-back’s Anfield deal expires officially on June 30, but the Spanish club would like to have him in the squad for the summer tournament in the United States.
The England international's departure leaves the Reds light in that area , with Conor Bradley their only recognised right-back.
As a result, the ECHO understands that Frimpong would be a player of interest to Liverpool this summer, particularly given his release clause of around £30m that can be triggered.
And the Bayer Leverkusen star has already expressed his feelings on Liverpool after being asked about the club when Xabi Alonso was linked with succeeding Jurgen Klopp.
"Liverpool is a great club with history,” he told Ziggo Sport in February 2024. “That would be great. Who knows what the future will bring."
Frimpong has impressed during his time in Germany, registering 29 goals and 44 assists in 189 appearances.
Arne Slot was, of course, the man chosen to replace Klopp, and it was confirmed on Friday that Alonso will leave Leverkusen at the end of the season.
A club statement from Leverkusen read: “Bayer 04 Leverkusen and head coach Xabi Alonso will part company after more than two and half years together.
“The champions of Germany, DFB Pokal and Supercup winners of 2024, have met the wish of the Spaniard to terminate his contract, originally due to run to the summer of 2026, after the end of this season. Bayer 04 will announce the successor as head coach at the appropriate time."
While sporting managing director Simon Rolfes said: “Together with Xabi, we have put together a team that has impressed the whole football world through quality on the pitch and mentality.
“We are proud of the big steps forward and the standing of the club today and wish Xabi all the best in his future roles. I'm sure our paths will often cross again."
