A new alert has been issued for all Gmail users, with Google advising everyone to remain 'vigilant'. The latest assault on one of the globe's most widely used email services seems to be fraudulent phone calls.

The cybercriminals initiate the scam by posing as representatives from the US tech behemoth.

They then try to coax unsuspecting individuals into divulging personal information under the pretense of needing to confirm a recovery account details change for a Google account.

In reality, no recovery is necessary. Their actual aim is to acquire the secure two-factor authentication code in an attempt to hijack the account and lock out the legitimate user.

The extent of the issue remains uncertain, but one Gmail user recently shared their experience of being targeted by this scam.

Posting on Reddit, user EvilKittensCo recounted how a supposed Google agent had called them, stating that they needed to verify the recovery account.

They were then asked for a code to ensure the account remained active, reports the Express.

Adding to the alarm, the number used for the call appeared to be from Google.

When questioned for an email address to validate their claim of being from the tech giant, an official-looking address was provided.

EvilKittensCo grew suspicious, but the scammers then resorted to pressure and scare tactics in an attempt to gain access to the account.

Other users have since chimed in on the thread, reporting that they, too, have been targeted by this threat.

Google has issued a cautionary message for Gmail users regarding a recent scam, making it clear that vigilance is key.

Google told Forbes, "This is a known scam targeting a limited number of users—we have no evidence it's a wide-scale tactic. We've hardened our defenses to protect users from this type of abuse and suspended accounts that have misused Google services in these scams. But we encourage all users to remain vigilant—please reiterate to your readers that Google will not call you to reset your password or troubleshoot account issues."

Google will "NEVER" randomly call asking for verification codes, the company said.

If a person who is alleged to be from the company contacts you requesting information, disconnect immediately, Google advised.

It warned that authentication codes should only be utilized during user-initiated security procedures with trusted Google platforms, asking users to be cautious and alert.

Following this, Gmail users received another warning about a highly intricate phishing scheme designed to swindle them out of their Google login details.
