Russia plans to send 30 teachers to secondary schools in Tajikistan by September 1, the first day of the next academic year.

The government-sponsored Russian World foundation, which promotes the Russian language and culture abroad, said on August 22 that teachers from the Russian regions of Kostroma, Kemerovo, Bashkortostan, Daghestan, and Tatarstan will go to the Central Asian country to teach subjects such as mathematics, physics, biology, chemistry, computer science, Russian, and others at secondary schools where teaching is conducted in Russian.

The teachers' monthly salary is set to be 74,000 rubles ($1,250), of which 60,000 ($1,000) will be paid by the Russian Education Ministry. The rest will be paid by Tajik authorities.

The ministry is also to also provide teachers with medical insurance, while the Tajik hosts will provide them with housing.

According to the foundation, Russia will also provide Tajikistan with 20 tons of textbooks on various subjects by September 1.

The usage of Russian has dramatically decreased in the Central Asian nation, which has a predominantly Muslim, Tajik-speaking population of 8.5 million.

The education sector in one of the poorest former Soviet republics has also been in decline after collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Based on reporting by Rossiiskaya Gazeta and RIA Novosti

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
