Millionaire antivirus pioneer John McAfee has shared photos of himself in a Dominican Republic detention cell, after he was arrested for bringing weapons and ammunition into the country.

McAfee, 73, the eccentric creator of the antivirus computer software of the same name, was released from detention on Wednesday along with five others.

They were suspected of traveling on a yacht carrying high-caliber weapons, ammunition and military-style gear, officials said.

Now, McAfee has shared photos of himself lying shirtless in his cell, joking that they were from his jailhouse photoshoot.

He tweeted: '[Mrs McAfee] insisted I looked better in this jailhouse photo since I was smiling. Janice was incarcerated in the cellblock next door at the same time. She just forgot how to properly smuggle phones.'

The Caribbean island's armed forces and public ministry said on Wednesday that McAfee was taken into custody along with his wife Elizabeth, US citizen Richard Alan Gibson, Robert Whitfield of Germany, Oral Thompson of The Bahamas and Vasner Louis of Haiti.

McAfee tweeted: 'I was well treated. My superiors were friendly and helpful. In spite of the helpful circumstances, we've decided to move on. More later.'

McAfee has been on the run from various law enforcement agencies since 2012 over his alleged involvement in a Belize murder. He is currently running from the IRS for not filing taxes.

Despite being a fugitive, he is running for president in 2020 on a cryptocurrency platform.

An outspoken critic of the government, Trump and global institutions, he claimed earlier this summer to have become 'trapped' in Cuba while running from the IRS.

On Tuesday, his campaign manager Rob Benedicto Pacifico Juan Maria Loggia-Ramirez took over his Twitter account to claim he had been detained.

He wrote cryptically: 'I have good reason to suspect that John McAfee and other companions have been detained by authorities at their latest port of call. I will be operating this account providing updates as they become possible.

'I last spoke with John as his boat was being boarded. The situation was tense but controlled. Our conversation was cut short by authorities confiscating their phones.

'The bastards wouldn't even give him a cigarette.'

He then made an ominous threat - that information would be released if John misses his 'next check-in'.

'If John misses his next check-in, events will be set into motion that I cannot prevent once they have begun. John has secreted data with individuals across the world.

'I know neither their identities or locations. They will release their payloads if John goes missing,' he wrote.

Last week, McAfee was tweeting from Cuba. He was on board with his wife and dogs.

Twitter users shared their skepticism on Tuesday over reports that he had been detained.

Loggia-Ramirez responded to them on Twitter, saying: 'There are also some people that doubt the veracity of today's report. That is fair enough and can be forgiven. But you will find you are mistaken - this is not a publicity stunt.

'Finally, to the few haters and authority-loving, bootlicking cowards rooting for John's demise - what more can be said but: f**k off.

'Enjoy it while you can, because your time is coming.'

On July 19, McAfee tweeted that the CIA had 'attempted' to 'collect' him and his wife.

Since then, he has tweeted that they had been at sea for days without any running water and that they were looking forward to reaching a port but he did not say where.

McAfee, who was at one time worth more than $100million due to the sale of his eponymous cybersecurity firm, has said that virtually all of his fortune is now gone.

McAfee took to the high seas in January, fleeing his heavily fortified Tennessee compound with wife Janice, 36, claiming a grand jury was preparing to indict him on tax-related charges.

Life in the Caribbean has also allowed McAfee to avoid a $25million judgement in a wrongful death lawsuit over the 2012 murder of his neighbor in Belize - a crime he was never charged with and has always strenuously denied.
