Celebs defend Meghan Markle and Prince Harry amid 'out of control' bullying over private plane controversy

Celebrities are speaking out in support of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry amid their latest controversy.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex sparked backlash when it was revealed on Monday that they had traveled with their son, Archie, to Elton John's home in Nice, France, on a private plane last week. The gist of the criticism has been that private planes negatively impact the environment, which goes against a lot of what Harry and Meghan have been preaching over the past several years.

Harry was also part of the group of high-profile names that included Barack Obama and Leonardo DiCaprio who were called out for traveling to Google Camp in Italy in a reported total of 114 private jets.

Sir Elton John himself was the first famous face to defend Harry and Meghan amid a barrage of negative reports and callouts on the internet this week, saying on Twitter that he was "deeply distressed by today’s distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s private stay at my home in Nice last week."

He revealed that he and his husband "provided them with a private jet flight" for their trip and, "to support Prince Harry’s commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint."

"I’m calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis," he finished.

Ellen DeGeneres was the next star to publicly voice her support for the new parents, sharing that she and wife Portia de Rossi recently met the couple to discuss their similar efforts to protect wildlife.

"Portia and I met Prince Harry and Meghan in England to talk about their work on wildlife conservation. They were the most down-to-earth, compassionate people," she said. "Imagine being attacked for everything you do, when all you’re trying to do is make the world better."

Singer Pink was another big name to defend them, taking to Twitter to share a compassionate message urging everyone to "all be a bit kinder."

"I’m happy to see people coming to the defense of The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The way people treat her is the most public form of bullying I have seen in a while," she wrote. "It’s out of control. Let’s all be a bit kinder, huh? Let’s show our children that it’s cool to be kind."
