New England Patriots At New York Jets: Monday Night Football Week 7 TV Schedule, Odds And Picks

Following
This article is more than 4 years old.

The New England Patriots (6-0) will try to remain undefeated by completing yet another season sweep of the New York Jets (1-4) this evening. This longstanding AFC East rivalry is set to spill into primetime when the teams meet on Monday Night Football to cap off Week 7 of the 2019 NFL season. The Pats thoroughly routed Gang Green at Foxborough back in Week 3 by a 30-14 margin—a game that Jets starting QB Sam Darnold was sidelined for—and are now expected to best this foe again, a victory that would push New England’s winning streak over New York to eight in a row. It may not come easy, however, especially with the Jets earning a statement win over the Cowboys last week—their first “W” of the campaign—and having homefield advantage on their side tonight.

Oddsmakers are still projecting that the Patriots will win in convincing fashion, installing them as 9.5-point chalk for Monday Night Football. This line hasn’t moved at all since it first went up on the board, which is interesting as approximately two-thirds of all public bets and cash wagered are on New England to cover the spread. This indicates that the sharps believe the Jets will keep things close in a game they also project to be relatively low scoring. The total for this Week 7 closer opened at 43.5 points, and while 58% of all betting slips and 51% of the handle have come in on the over, the line has since fallen to 43, largely due the wiseguys having a lean on the under.

Will New England explode for a double-digit win over its AFC East rival in primetime as the public is hoping for, or will the Jets surprise almost everyone but the smart bettors by making this a competitive contest? Pro handicapper Jon Price of SportsInformationTraders.com has a take that you won’t want to miss. Monday Night Football Week 7 Media

Mike Reiss posted a quote from Patriots head coach Bill Belichick on the intensity of Monday Night Football matchups:

Matt Walsh pointed out that the Patriots have hardly been tested by quality opponents during the 2019 NFL season:

New England special teams captain Matthew Slater said that records and trends mean little in a rivalry game where the opponents are innately familiar with one another (via Patriots.com):

When you play rivalry games like this, records go out the window, they mean nothing. They know us, we know them. They're going to give us their best shot, we're going to try to give them our best shot. That's going to make for a good competitive football game. Certainly that's been the case down there, I expect it to be no different. For me personally, all those games are a little more intense when you're playing a divisional opponent. New York and Boston kind of have a thing and I learned that 12 years ago and it's definitely held true.

Evan Silva noted that Jets quarterback Sam Darnold has performed admirably over his last six starts:

Phil Perry quoted Patriots signal-caller Tom Brady on how top wideout Julian Edelman isn’t getting the respect he deserves as one of the best receivers the game has ever seen:

New York head coach Adam Gase contrasted his up-and-coming, rebuilding Jets with New England’s veteran-laden squad (via NYPost.com):

We’re such a work in progress right now. The hardest part of being in a first-year program is you’ve got two phases that are completely new. The guys are trying to learn the details of everything, and sometimes it doesn’t happen as fast as everybody wants…For me, when I look at [New England’s defense] right now, it looks like a group that they’ve played together, they know exactly what they’re doing going into the game, they know what they’re looking to stop, they know exactly how to play off of each other. I think they have some really good chemistry going on, to where some of that might be those guys playing together for a few years now. When you’ve got guys that aren’t thinking, and they’re communicating and they’re able to play fast, it makes it really hard on the offensive side.

Manish Mehta thinks that Gang Green should be offended by the Monday Night Football betting line:

Nick Kostos believes the Week 7 finale will come down to the wire:

Jets wide receiver Demaryius Thomas is looking for revenge after being cut, re-signed and finally traded away from New England to a divisional rival right before the 2019 NFL season began (via NYDailyNews.com):

It was insulting, for sure. Once I got cut (on August 31), I could have just come here (to the Jets) and not stayed there and re-sign. When they re-signed me, I was thinking that I was good. Two weeks later, I was gone. So, it’s like, ‘Why did I waste my time?’ Because at the end of the day, it was kind of a waste of time for me…It was disrespectful to me. Like, you know, you could trust me and I could trust you. You told me when you cut me at the (final) cut, sit around you’ll bring me back. And I stayed. I could have easily become a Jet once I got cut.… I could have been here the next day after I got released. But I chose to stay.
