WISP Members Score Big at Security Innovation CMD+CTRL Cyber Range Training

Women in security and privacy show off their skills at DEFCON prep session and gain a deeper understanding of how to better protect their organizations from cyber attacks

Wilmington, MA, July 23, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Security Innovation, a pioneer in software security assessment and training, announced that as part of its sponsorship of Women in Security and Privacy (WISP), dozens of women from the security industry took part in a pre-DEFCON CMD+CTRL cyber range training in San Francisco last week.  As the only cyber range focused exclusively on Web application security, CMD+CTRL enabled the attendees to put on their hacker hats in order to gain a deeper understanding of how cyber-attackers find and exploit vulnerabilities in insecure software applications.

“The CTF provided by Security Innovation had a tremendously positive impact on the WISP community. This is empirical evidence we have gathered from comments from the attendees,” said Mel Masterson, WISP Events Committee Lead. “This is our third CTF with Security Innovation and we hope to bring more resources for beginners next year. On behalf of WISP and our growing community, I want to express gratitude towards Security Innovation and look forward to our continued partnership.”

Margaret Ho, a Security Engineer from Security Innovation ran the WISP CMD+CTRL training using the fully functional Shred Retail ecommerce application.  Leveraging cheat sheets and other easy to understand tips, participants of all skill levels were able to gain insight into how hackers:

  • buy items in an unintended way
  • tamper with other user’s functionality
  • crack passwords
  • elevate privileges

Each player vied to attain the maximum number of points available.  The top scorer earned 3,395 points, the second 2,880 points, followed by the third at 2,145 points.

“Our mission is to provide cutting edge solutions that improve cybersecurity readiness for organizations across the globe.  We built CMD+CTRL as part of that commitment, and it has become an exceptional way to give developers and security professionals the skills necessary to meet today’s changing threat and attack landscape,” said Lisa Parcella, VP of Product Management and Marketing at Security Innovation. “It was a fantastic evening and also very rewarding to watch such a capable cadre of women in our industry do exceedingly well throughout the workshop.”

Unique in the industry, CMD+CTRL consists of authentic applications in each available vertical that participants can attack to discover flaws. It provides the type of training needed to overcome the security skills gap that most organizations face. Security Innovation has conducted CMD+CTRL cyber range trainings around the globe for thousands of players at the world’s leading brands and industry conferences including FS-ISAC, DEF CON, OWASP AppSec California and others.
